World Cup Peru Football Shirts by Umbro

The Peru national team has been playing international football since 1927. Since then their performances have been mixed, they enjoyed their most successful periods during the 1930s and 1970s. The team play most of their home games in the country's capital, Lima.

Tournament History

Peru have had success in the Copa America, winning the tournament in 1939 and 1975. Peru have had relative success on the biggest international stage, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup numerous times. Peru's best run during a World Cup came in Mexico, 1970. They managed to reach the Quarter-final stage, losing to the tournament winners Brazil.

Supporters

Since the 20th century football has become the most popular sport in Peru. The game started largely exclusive to Lima's Anglophile elite, and secluded from the rest of the city, football became an integral part of wider popular culture during the early 1900s. The Peruvian football fans are known for their distinctive chant ¡Arriba Perú! ("Onward Peru!"), to express support, both at national team games and at club matches.
