Portugal: Recent Euro Tournaments

Portugal's best Euro and International success came in 2004 when a squad that included Luís Figo, Rui Costa, Nuno Gomes and a then 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo were the runners-up to Greece. With Cristiano Ronaldo in his prime and joined by Manchester United's Nani, Portugal entered the 2012 Euro tournament with their sites on surpassing their 2004 achievement and hoisting the coveted Euro trophy. They successfully survived the dreaded group B, the toughest group in the tournament. They then defeated the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals before conceeding a hard-fought match to Spain in the semifinals. Cristiano Ronaldo, a player with numerous club team accolades and seemingly endless ability, finally shed his reputation for being unimpactful in national team play by coming up big for his country in the tournament.

Euro 2016

As they entered the 2016 Euro Tournament Portugal found themselves ranked #7 in the world by FIFA. They were drawn into Group F with Iceland, Austria, and Hungary, and were early favourites to finish 1st in their group. Portugal did not make things easy for themselves, finishing 3rd in the group and qualifying for the knock-out stages as the 3rd best third placed team. Portugal managed to overcome the poor start to the tournament and lift the trophy, beating France 1-0, with substitute Eder scoring the only goal in added time. Following their Euro 2016 victory, Portugal participated in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they finished third.

World Cup 2018

After their success at Euro 2016, expectations will be high for Portuguese fans going into the World Cup. With a player like Ronaldo in your team, anything is possible. It's not all about Ronaldo though, players like Rúben Neves, Bernardo Silva and Rui Patrício will bring the quality Portugal will be looking for to help them to be serious contenders for the World Cup. Portugal's run came to an end at the Round of 16 stage, losing 2-1 to Uruguay.
