The start of Euro 2020 coincided with Pride Month . A wave of good will towards the LGBT+ community swept across the continent. Ahead of the The Netherlands' last sixteen match against the Czech Republic in Budapest, Dutch Captain Georginio Wijnaldum stated his intention to wear a rainbow armband in support of the community stating "The armband means a lot because we stand for diversity – one love means everybody is a part of it and everybody should be free to be who they are." Fearing a backlash from the Hungarian crowd, featuring a heavy presence of supporters of Right-wing Prime Minister Victor Orban, who had recently passed anti-LGBT+ legislation, Wijnaldum and his team team have promised to walk off the pitch if they face any racial or homophobic abuse.
