Now synonymous with their Celeste (sky blue) shirts, Uruguay initialy wore the half & half navy-red shirts of Montevidean side Albion FC. However, when when Uruguayan club River Plate defeated the oldest Argentine club Alumni FC in 1910, becoming the first club from their nation to do so, it was suggested by one of their players that their national team should adopt River Plate's sky blue change shirt as their national colours in tribute. The four stars above their crest denote the 4 World Championships they have won. The 1930 & 1950 World Cups as well as the 1924 & 1928 Olympic Gold Medals that were recognised as the world championships prior the the World Cup's foundation.
