Italy National Football Team: A Brief History of the Federation and Its Kit
The Italian National Football Team may be considered history’s most successful European football federation for their dominance in World Cup competition. Having won the World Cup Trophy in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006, their four victories in the tournament is a mark only eclipsed by Brazil’s five. They also have one European Championship to their credit, having won the tournament in 1968, and one Olympic Football Championship, having won the gold in 1936. Founded in 1910, the Italian National Team is now entering its second century of excellence, with greats from the 2006 World Cup Champion squad like Gianluigi Buffon, Gennaro Gattuso, Francesco Totti, Alessandro Del Piero, and Fabio Cannavaro passing the torch to slightly younger Italian football stars like Daniele De Rossi, Fabrio Quagliarella and Alberto Gilardino.
A Closer Look at the Italia Kit
The classic blue of the Italy Home Kit is an homage to the royal dynasty which unified Italy in 1861, and has earned the federation the nickname gli azzurri (the blues). Pure yet elegant, traditional yet proud, the white of the Italy Away Kit is no less quintessentially Italian. The crest that adorns the Italy Home Shirt and the Italy Away Shirt bears the three colours of the Italy flag, the letters FIGC for Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (Italian Football Federation), and four stars which eternally commemorate the federation’s four World Cup Championships. While the Italian National Football Team Kit has been produced by various manufacturers over its celebrated history, the design of both colour and crest has seen little change in modern history. For the purist, the azzurri will always be known as Italia, and only the authentic Italia apparel will do. Luckily, under the federation's present marketing direction, never before have there been more Italia Kits, Italia T-shirts and other items of Italia Training Wear, Italia hats, Italia scarves and other Italia Accessories, available to fans of the azzurri.
