FSV Mainz 05 are nicknamed the Carnival Club and have introduced the fun of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel to the Bundesliga. Tuchel has guided Mainz to another year in the German top-flight, as the club continues to establish itself at the top table in German football. After crashing out of Europe by the start of the school year, Mainz were able to focus on securing a mid-table finish in the Bundesliga, finishing up in 13th and safe of the relegation battle.
Departures have come in the close season – Adam Szalai to Schalke 04, Andreas Ivanschitz to Levante and Jan Kirchhoff to FC Bayern, among others – but Mainz have stepped outside their comfort zone, by investing strongly in bolstering their options to replace some important players leaving the club.
Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 23-year-old Dani Schahin and Stuttgart’s Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki cost £3m combined with other additions, like Julian Koch from Borussia Dortmund and Sebastian Polter from VfL Wolfsburg. After years of working on a shoe-string budget, promising young boss Thomas Tuchel has the tools to give Mainz fans a strong season.
And the club have given the fans an excellent home shirt 13/14 to show off, too. Mainz’s home shirt is again red with a vertical white stripe through the club logo, a familiar template by NIKE. The away kit for the Carnival Club is a tidy black design for the forthcoming season in their partnership with the manufacturers.
If the season actually works out as good as the close season, Mainz fans might have one to remember in 2013/14.
